What a delightful surprise that blue chip patternmaking company Oomaru Seisakusho 2 has come out with an outerwear line, and an extraordinarily unique one at that.

The line is called Overcoat. It’s not only unisex, it’s practically unisize. Akiko Ichikawa from originalslope tells us that the coats come in only 1 or 2 sizes designed to fit everyone. The idea is not to be form fitting but free flowing, which seems appropriate for a cloak wearer. Although, what you notice first about the outerwear on display at the pop up store on 167 Canal Street is not how the garments drape, so much as their brilliant melange of textures, textiles, and tones.

Oomaru Seisakusho 2 is a patternmaking company with a client list that could double as a who’s who of relevant fashion designers. The company was founded by master patternmaker Ryuhei Oomaru in 2008. The irony of the Overcoat collection, though, is that the pieces don’t seem to have been made from patterns at all. They give the outward appearance of being one-off, one-of-a-kind garments made from carefully collected remnant fabrics.

The photographs by Ichikawa showcase not only the outerwear from the collection but also the means of their production, and this is appropriate for a collection of outerwear that is so focused on the art of assemblage.

The pop up is open until 2/25.
