A special standout of our Frieze coverage was the Ryan McNamara dance piece that was part of the 2017 Tribute: Il Teatro Delle Mostre (1968/2017). Il Teatro Delle Mostre, which translates to “Theater of Exhibitions” was an influential Roman performance series done at the height of the politically avant-garde art movement that was roughly concurrent with the May 1968 events in Paris. Surely relevant comparisons abound between the climate in ‘68 and 2017, so this tribute seems especially poignant. McNamara’s work (along with Adam Pendleton’s) was part of the tribute that consisted of original choreography. Captured here in GIF form we see performed the relationship between connectivity and dehumanization.

We are also told that McNamara is inspired in part by ASMR, a phenomenon that we first learned about in our conversations with Glasser, which speaks to the surprising and innovative ways in which sound is incorporated into the work.
